Mary

Speech and Language Therapist

Mary is from London, where she was born and raised, though she is of Cypriot heritage. Following her career in teaching English, She graduated with a Master’s Degree with merit in speech and language therapy from University College, London. Since then, she has worked in children and young people’s speech and language therapy services at the leading NHS foundation trusts in London across clinics, health centres, children’s centres, nurseries, mainstream schools and special schools. Since moving to Dubai in 2021, she has been working across various schools, supporting children with specialist intervention programmes via external services.

She is passionate about children achieving their best in terms of gaining skills and making progress, whilst also being dedicated to each child’s holistic well-being through commitment to developing children’s joy and confidence in playing, talking and communicating. To further achieve this, she practices working in partnership with families to empower the use of strategies across other environments (home and school) and other (healthcare) professionals to team around the child as per their profile and needs. She has experience working with children with a wide range of needs, including autism spectrum disorders, social communication difficulties, developmental language disorder, developmental speech disorders, motor speech disorders, stammering and speech and/or language delays.

To further her in-depth knowledge about speech and language development, she is committed to continued professional development to support her work and has been trained in using a variety of interventions and communication supports that have yielded consistent results in her practice. These include using Makaton to support attention and give children a means to communicate, Smile therapy for the demonstration of functional skills, Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing to progress motor programming in the speech pathway and, most recently, Attention Autism to inspire children’s natural curiosity and joy to attend together with others during play activities. Her clinical practice thrives on following both current and evidence-based practice to impact change in the children she sees in meaningful, child-led and interactive ways, including adult-child interaction therapy, Lego therapy and social and emotional intervention programmes.
